Dupin Lite 2 has the same powerful Get Dupes-Filter-and-Purge features as the original Dupin but fewer power-user features and tools. If you aren't interested in managing duplicate tracks as much as just identifying and eliminating them then Dupin Lite 2 may be the simpler way to go. Based on the story by Edgar Allan Poe, Murders in the Rue Morgue is a haunting atmospheric classic starring horror icon Bela Lugosi (Dracula). Deranged scientist Dr. Mirakle (Bela Lugosi) searches Paris for a 'prospective bride' for his pet gorilla.

Hold onto your hats: RealNetworks is still around (*gasp*) and it just released a new-ish software product to help clean up users' iTunes libraries. The software, called 'Rinse,' removes duplicate songs from your collection, fixes the tags so that your song names, artists, and albums are correct, adds missing album art, and 'refines' your genre categorizations in hopes of making your music listening experience more streamlined.
Rinse costs $39 to run on Mac OS X or Windows (XP, Vista, and Windows 7), though a free trial is available for those who want to see how it works before purchasing. Of course, there's competition on both platforms—a plethora of third-party tools can do one or more of the aforementioned tasks—but few can do all of them well. Does Rinse measure up? We gave it a run-through to find out.
Functionality
Rinse appears to be a reworked version of the old TidySongs application, whose site now points to Real's site for Rinse. And we'll warn you up front: Rinse appears to make use of Adobe AIR, Adobe's platform that essentially allows developers to write desktop-style applications using HTML that render through WebKit. Not everyone is a fan of AIR applications—in part because they don't tend to follow UI guidelines for the platforms they're used on, and in part because they are sometimes slow—so if you're AIR averse, stop now.
I, on the other hand, have already littered my Mac desktop with AIR applications that I never use, so what's one more? Rinse was easy enough to install, and once you start it up, the options are laid out for you:
Almost anything you'd ever want is located under the Main Menu, and Real gives users the option to simulate the 'fixing' (versus actually making changes) for those of us with commitment issues. When you simulate, the program merely tells you how many duplicates you have (for example), whereas if you actually chose to make changes, you have the option of removing the dupes or adding 'DUPLICATE' to the comment field.
Though the 'simulate' option isn't technically there for adding album art, fixing your song tags, or organizing genres, you can still perform these tasks with little commitment (until you're ready, that is). For example, you can add album art to artless songs and albums one by one or by playlist—if you choose to do it automatically by playlist, it goes through each song one-by-one and gives you a small window of time (I chose five seconds per song) to accept or reject the proposed change.
You can also change the 'confidence' level when it comes to applying album art. I set mine to 95 percent confidence (meaning that the algorithm is almost completely sure that the art is correct), but you can lower the number to whatever you'd like so that you can see more album art in order to accept or reject the changes.
Rinse lets you fix broken songs the same way—one by one or automatic by playlist—with the bonus feature of finding 'missing' songs. These are songs that seem to be on your computer but not in your iTunes library:
Under the 'Options' menu item, Real gives you the choice of which tags you'd like to fix when using Rinse—if you want to fix the spelling of artist names but don't want to muck with the existing artwork or track numbers, for example, you can do that. You can also skip songs with specific words, or even select a different library than the one Rinse automatically detects upon loading.
I only tried the free trial of Rinse, which limits you to a maximum of 50 'fixed' songs before it prompts you to pay up. The downside is that you can't experiment much once you've hit your maximum—the only feature I found to remain enabled for me was the Simulate option when finding duplicate songs—but the upside is that the tool actually seems to work. Rinse uses Sony's CDDB database in order to correctly identify songs, which itself helps to find duplicates and fix broken tags, and although this isn't much different from what iTunes already offers, it does help when you buy music from multiple places (or if you have ripped music from CDs with less-than-perfect information).
It's the little things
Not everything was made of roses in Rinse, though. I noticed a number of unpolished details when clicking around the app that didn't affect functionality, but showed some serious lack of attention to detail. As you can see from the screenshot above, there were times when words were mangled ('missings songs' instead of 'missing songs'). There were other times when the progress bar showed me something like being 104 percent complete—really?
If Real is going to ask real customers (ba-dum..) to pay $40 apiece for its software, it could put a little effort into getting the details right. And if the program is making math errors to add things up to more than 100 percent, how can I be sure it's not making other programming-related errors when processing my iTunes library? Real obviously recognizes the relative seriousness of making changes to your music files; otherwise it wouldn't have included simulation options and give you the ability to approve or reject changes. So how about boosting some consumer confidence by polishing the app a little more before release?
It's for this reason that we hesitate to recommend Rinse when there are a handful of other options available. For example, Windows users can use meta-iPod to remove duplicates, add album art, compare your metadata against verified sources, and even assign track ratings. Mac users can use Doug's AppleScripts for iTunes in order to manage their music (with a script for pretty much any task you would dream up), or simply use the $15 Dupin app to remove duplicates. And there's always TuneUp for Mac and Windows, which can also fix song info, remove duplicates, and add missing cover art for $39.95 per year or $49.95 for a lifetime subscription.
But maybe we're overly skeptical (and we're sure you'll let us know). What are some of your solutions for managing your iTunes library?
